ISSUE 33: 24th October, 2025
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
In this Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 18:9–14), Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector — two men who come to the temple to pray. One boasts of his goodness, while the other humbly asks for mercy. Jesus reminds us that “the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” This story calls us to approach God — and others — with humility and honesty. True prayer isn’t about showing how good we are, but about opening our hearts and acknowledging our need for God’s grace. As parents and carers, we can model this humility by showing our children that mistakes are part of learning, that forgiveness matters, and that gratitude brings peace. When we lead with humility, we make room for compassion, growth, and God’s quiet work within us.

This Week at Sacred Heart
Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
Weekly Update
What a wonderful week it’s been at Sacred Heart! Our students and staff have finished Term 4’s Mission activities on a high, celebrating with our joyful Mission Month Mass and the Colour Explosion Fun Run. It was an afternoon of colour, laughter, and pure joy as students raced through the course in support of Catholic Mission and the Shared Table projects in Peru. Thanks to your incredible generosity, we’ve already raised over $5,800 from the fun run, contributing to an amazing total close to $10,000 for Mission efforts across 2025!
A big congratulations to our top fundraising classes so far:
- Minga – $1,166
- Yongana – $905
- Mootwingee – $560
- Amaroo – $556
- Eumeralla - $480
Money can keep being donated until Friday 7th November with prizes handed out a few weeks later. Your generosity truly brings our mission of Fullness of Life for All to life — thank you!
Meanwhile, our sporting stars have also been shining. On Wednesday, our students competed in the Division Tennis and Volleyball competitions, showing fantastic teamwork and school spirit. A special congratulations to our Boys Volleyball and Girls Tennis teams who have qualified for next week’s Regional Finals in Swan Hill — what a terrific achievement!
We also welcomed our 2025 Foundation students for their first Transition Day today, and they did an amazing job! It was great to see them settling in, with the help of their Year 5 buddies, and getting excited for next year.
Please note there will be no newsletter next Friday due to our short week — but we’ll be back the following week to share all the latest updates and celebrations as we head towards the end of another fantastic school year.

Pupil Free Day - Structured Literacy (Wk 4 - Monday 27th October)
Next Monday, our staff will take part in a full day of professional learning focused on strengthening our evidence-based teaching and learning practices. The day will include revisiting our core I Do, We Do, You Do pedagogy, exploring The Science of Reading research, and analysing student data to guide next steps for improvement. Sacred Heart is proud to be achieving some of the strongest learning growth across the Diocese, and we’re now working towards becoming a model school where others can visit to see our practice in action.
Year 5 Ballarat Camp (Wk 4 - Monday 27th - Wednesday 29th October)
We wish our Year 5 students all the best for their upcoming Ballarat Camp! They’ll head off at 7:15am on Monday and return on Wednesday around 5pm. During the camp, students will explore Sovereign Hill and other historic sites, learning about the Gold Rush era, democracy through the Eureka Rebellion, and the impact on the region. It’s also a great opportunity for students to build independence and social skills.
A big thank you to Mrs Deacon for organising this exciting experience. Thursday will be a rest day, with supervision available for any students who attend school.
School Advisory Council (SAC) (Wk 4 - Tuesday 28th October)
Our final School Advisory Council Meeting for 2025 will be held this Tuesday evening at 5:15pm. We sincerely thank our wonderful parent representatives — Racheal Fyfe, Melissa Waters, Warren Henderson, Ben Tallent, Ben Chatfield, and Katie McCoy — for their ongoing commitment and contribution to our school this year.
We are now inviting expressions of interest for new parent representatives to join the SAC in 2026. This is a fantastic opportunity to play an active role in our school community, offering ideas and input into planning and decision-making for the future. If you’d like to nominate yourself, please contact the school office for a nomination form.
In response to recent parent feedback about the cost and practicality of our school uniform, the SAC will begin exploring potential changes. At this meeting, we’ll have a guest presenting some uniform options as a starting point for discussion. Parents who are interested are warmly invited to attend and be part of this early conversation about the future direction of our school uniform.
Regional Finals – Volleyball & Tennis (Wk 4 - Thursday 30th October)
We wish our Boys Volleyball and Girls Tennis teams the very best of luck as they head to Swan Hill on Thursday to compete in the Regional Finals. We’re so proud of their hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship — go Sacred Heart!

All 2026 School Fee Commitment Forms have now been emailed to fee payers via DocuSign. Please complete your form as soon as possible. Once received, Mary will calculate your individual school fees and prepare your Payment Option Plan. You’ll then receive an SMS inviting you to visit the Office to sign your plan—helping you plan and budget for 2026.

School Fees
Thank you to all families who have finalised their school fees for the year. For those managing their own direct debits, term, or annual payments, fees should now be paid in full unless alternative arrangements have been made. If payment hasn’t yet been completed, please do so as soon as possible. We’ll begin following up with families who haven’t paid via phone or email in the coming weeks. Families experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to contact the Office for a confidential conversation about available support options.
Foundation 2026 Enrolments – Still Open
We still have places available for Foundation in 2026! If you know of any families thinking about joining Sacred Heart, please encourage them to get in touch and enrol soon. We’d be delighted to welcome them into our caring and vibrant school community.

Parent Feedback Form
At Sacred Heart, we truly value the voices of our families. Your insights, ideas, and suggestions help us continue to grow as a school community.
While our preference is always to chat in person — a quick conversation at the gate, a phone call, or a scheduled meeting — we know that this isn’t always possible. To make things easier, we’ve created a simple Parent Feedback Form, which you can access by clicking on the link below.
This form gives you the opportunity to share:
- Positive feedback about what’s working well
- Suggestions or ideas to strengthen our school
- General comments you’d like us to consider
If you have a major concern or grievance, please follow our school’s Grievance Policy so that it can be addressed appropriately and in a timely manner. If your concern relates specifically to your child, it may be important to include your name and details, as it can be difficult for us to follow up or resolve the issue without that information.
We encourage you to use the form as another avenue to stay connected with us. Every piece of feedback helps us make Sacred Heart the best it can be.

Learning and Teaching

How Kids Learn Best — This simple model explains how a child’s environment, attention, and memory all work together to help them learn and remember new things. By creating calm, structured routines and encouraging deep thinking, we can help students build strong, lasting knowledge. At Sacred Heart, we promote purposeful learning environments that help every child thrive. (Source: Jamie Clarke Education)

Literacy Learning
This week in Literacy, we have been practising reading and spelling words with the sounds we have learnt, including our bossy e words. We explored actions and their opposites and learnt about the prefix un, reading and spelling words that include it. We also focused on reading and spelling new tricky words — walk, talk, and know. Students have been learning about multi-syllable words (words with two, three or even four parts) and when to use the tch and ch - dge and ge graphemes when spelling.
Numeracy Learning
In Numeracy, we have been learning about fact families and how numbers are connected through addition and subtraction. Students practised breaking numbers into parts, writing matching addition and subtraction sentences, and explaining what each number represents. Using dominoes, they created and solved their own fact families, worked with partners to find all related number facts, and shared their strategies for finding missing numbers.
Colour Run
We had a fantastic day yesterday participating in the 2025 Colour Fun Run. Thank you to all of the families and people who have donated.

Year Two News
Year 2 and especially Mootwingee were very excited this week to welcome Mrs Carmichael back from her big overseas holiday! It was wonderful to see some of her photos throughout her journey, but even better to hear about Mr & Mrs Carmichael’s experiences in person! A huge thank you to Mrs Garzon who worked with Mootwingee in her absence.
Both Year Two classes are still in need of a few shoe boxes, if anyone has a spare lying around, we would love them to be brought in by Tuesday for our Science activities. Children will also require a 650ml plastic water bottle for a maths task in a few weeks time. If you have any of these around, please send them in. Thanks in advance!

By creating their own advertisements, students developed critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of what drives us to buy.

Students have been exploring surrealism and learning about Salvador Dali and his famous melting clocks. Students are creating their own interruption of this famous piece. Check out our work in progress.

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
